England cricket star Jason Roy could have been a Harlequins player had he taken up a contract offer at Under-17 level.

Roy will open England's batting against the West Indies in Sunday's World T20 final in Kolkota as he looks to continue his remarkable run of form after hitting 78 off 44 balls in their semifinal win over New Zealand on Thursday.

But things could have been very different for Roy had he taken up an offer from Harlequins at Under-17 level. Roy was on the books of Surrey at age-grade level in cricket but was also a talented rugby player and aged 16 he was handed offers from both sports.

"He had a choice at U-17 level," Jason Roy's father Craig told the Evening Standard. "Harlequins were interested in him signing for them but he was offered a little money by Surrey so he stayed. That's when it all took off and he really started believing in himself as a cricketer."
