The Blues have strengthened their position at halfback for next season with the recruitment of the Chiefs' Augustine Pulu.

Currently sidelined by a broken arm, Pulu will join the Blues on a two-year deal where he will link up with his former coach at Counties Manukau, Tana Umaga.

"Obviously I've had a lot to do with Augustine and I am impressed with his ability on the field and his demeanour off it, both as a player and a leader," Umaga said.

"He will bring a different approach and style to the halfback game which will provide us with more options in how we play."

Pulu hasn't featured in Super Rugby this season after shifting his focus to the New Zealand Sevens program and a spot at the Rio Olympics.

But that dream was dealt a severe blow when he suffered a broken arm at the Sydney Sevens in early February.

He played no part in the All Blacks Sevens' runners-up finish at the Hong Kong leg at the weekend, leaving him just three tournaments to earn a spot in the New Zealand squad for Rio.

Pulu has played two Tests for the All Blacks, but the Chiefs remained well stocked at No.9 with Brad Weber and Tawera Kerr-Barlow both currently enjoying strong seasons.
