Brumbies back-rower Ita Vaea has announced his retirement with immediate effect.

Vaea has called time on his rugby career due to ongoing health problems relating to his heart. He left the field against the Chiefs in Canberra in Round 6 of Super Rugby and after later consulting with a doctor, he made the decision to step away from the game.

It's a situation that could have come as early as 2012 when it was discovered Vaea was suffering from life-threatening blood clots.

But he staged a remarkable comeback and returned to the field in 2015, proving himself to the point where only last week Wallabies coach Michael Cheika invited him to be part of a two-day national camp.

"I am extremely disappointed to be retiring today, under these circumstances," Vaea said.

"It has truly been an honour to represent the Brumbies over the past five years.

"While my playing career has now ended, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have met and shared experiences with special players and coaches who I can call lifelong friends.

"It will be hard watching the boys run out, but I know that this is the best decision for myself and my family."

Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham hailed Vaea as a true team man.

"He is one of the most respected players from both his teammates and staff," Larkham said.

"His determination to return to rugby after the initial diagnosis shows his true character.

"He took part in last week's Wallabies camp in Sydney, which shows you that he is currently regarded as one of the nation's top players.

"We will definitely miss Ita's contribution as a Brumbies player, but understand that there are much more important things in life than rugby."
