The Stormers struck in the last play of the match to deny the Sunwolves a famous victory as their meeting in Singapore finished locked in a 17-17 draw.
The Sunwolves, who have only won one match this season, at one stage led 17-3 but the Stormers struck twice in the last 20 minutes through Pieter-Steph du Toit and Vincent Koch to force a draw.
The first half saw the Sunwolves take command of the match as they went into the break 14-3 to the good thanks to a close-range finish from Akihito Yamada and three penalties from Tusi Pisi.
Come the second 40 the Sunwolves started the better and thought they had forced a second score through Yamada but after a lengthy consultation with the Television Match Official, the referee ruled out his effort for a double movement.
Despite that setback, the Sunwolves stuck a further two penalties on the board and even when Pieter-Steph du Toit struck for the Stormers in the 60th minute, the Japanese franchise looked like they were going to close out the match.
But then came the final throes where breaks from Damian de Allende and Juan de Jongh gave the Stormers the platform to put Koch over to leave the South African side trailing by two.
They needed the conversion to draw level and Brandon Thomson held his nerve to draw the game level in added time.
