Beaumont elected as World Rugby chairman

Bill Beaumont has been elected as World Rugby's new chairman with Agustin Pichot taking up the vice-chairman post.

Beaumont replaces the outgoing Bernard Lapasset who leaves to spearhead Paris' bid for the 2024 Olympics having taken on his World Rugby role in 2007.

Pichot steps into the vice-chairman void left by South Africa Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins who opted against seeking re-election.

For Beaumont, the appointment marks the end of his tenure as the Rugby Football Union chairman and his role as chairman of the Six Nations. He had a stellar playing career with England and won 34 caps from 1975 to 1982, captaining the side on 21 occasions. He also played in seven Test matches for the British & Irish Lions across the 1977 and 1980 tours.

Pichot was the driving force behind Argentina's inclusion in the Rugby Championship and is regarded as one of the professional game's premier scrum-halves having played for the Pumas 71 times.

Beaumont and Pichot take up their new roles on July 1.
