Clermont down Castres to go top

Clermont Auvergne moved to the top of the Top 14 table on Saturday with a come-from-behind 29-19 win over Castres at the Stade Marcel Michelin.

David Strettle struck for the game's first try in the 19th minute, then Benjamin Urdapilleta hit back five minutes later for Castres, with the conversion edging them into a narrow lead.

A tight contest saw the visitors take a two point lead into the break, before Judicael Cancoriet grabbed the crucial first score of the second half to take Clermont into the lead, with Noa Nakaitaci going over shortly afterwards to assert the home team's dominance.

Castres were kept tryless in the second period, and so Clermont go top, with La Rochelle and Montpelier both playing on Sunday.

A late Raphael Lagarde penalty saw Bayonne draw 22-22 with Lyon at the Stade Jean Dauger, after Mike Harris for the visitors and Romaine Martial for the hosts had crossed for tries. Fred Michalak looked to have secured the points for Lyon with his second penalty kick in the 74th minute, but Lagarde stepped up to level the scores in the 78th.

Another nail-biter at the Stade du Hameau resulted in a 30-28 win for Bordeaux-Begles at the home of Pau. UBB claimed their fourth win of the Top 14 season thanks to a 77th minute try from replacement Romain Lonca, meaning that Tom Taylor's eight successful kicks for the hosts were in vain as they let an eight point lead going into the last ten minutes slip away.

Meanwhile at the Stade Ernest Wallon, Toulouse continued their resurgence as they dispatched Grenoble by 31-3. Gillian Galan and Maxime Médard crossed for the hosts in the first half, with Tala Gray and Florian Fritz completing the rout with second-half tries.

In the evening's late kick-off at the Stade Amédée-Domenech, Brive defeated Racing 92 25-16.
