Springboks prop suffers serious neck injury

Springboks prop Julian Redelinghuys faces an extended period on the sidelines after he suffered a serious neck injury during yesterday's Currie Cup semifinal between the Free State Cheetahs and Golden Lions in Bloemfontein.

Redelinghuys, who has played eight tests for South Africa, twisted his neck badly in a collision with Cheetahs hooker Torsten van Jaarsveld and was taken from the field on a stretcher.

Golden Lions team doctor Rob Collins confirmed to Rugby365 that Redelinghuys sustained a "dislocation" of his neck at the C5/6 level during the game.

"He has minimal temporary weakness of his left arm," Collins said.

The 27 year old will undergo surgery on Sunday in a Bloemfontein hospital. The Lions doctor expects the Bok prop is expected to make a "full recovery".

The Springboks will head north without Redelinghuys at the end of the month, ahead of tests against England, Italy and Wales.
